What to do if your dog. . .
Breaks a tooth!
Mutt Magic Training Services

February was actually pet dental health month. While this is coming a month late, it is still important information. Dog dental health is something that many of you know is a subject that is close to my heart (and wallet)! Others may simply know that I've made some odd comment or another about their dog's teeth. . .hope I didn't make you uncomfortable. But, I am like the tooth fairy!!!

Dogs require regular dental care, just like we do. Making sure that your dog's teeth and gums are healthy requires regular maintenance in the form of dental chews, proper diet, and cleaning. Even while maintaining regular dental hygiene, wear and breakage will still occur. Wear is normal, and will vary between dogs and activities. Breakage is not normal, but does occur often. Breakage may occur if your dog chews on crates, bones, or other hard objects. It may occur if your dog is playing with another dog, and it may occur if your dog is involved in dog sports. Regardless of how a dental fracture occurs, it requires veterinary care.

The attention needed after a break is determined by the severity. If pulp is exposed, resulting in the root canal being exposed and the tooth bleeding after the initial break, time plays a big role in determining whether or not the tooth can be saved. Often, dental fractures in young dogs can wait a few days before repair is needed. The tooth is still growing, and repair may be a "simple" pulpectomy. In this case, the tooth is saved and remains alive. In older dogs, a pulpectomy must be done within hours. Otherwise, a root canal or extraction will be needed. This can be very costly!

Preventing breakage is important. Be sure that your dog has appropriate chew items and that he is seen regularly for dental check ups by your veterinarian.
