It was great to meet new people and see old friends at DogFest, in June. If you attended, you know it was a HOT day outside, but I think that it was still fun and enjoyable for all. I wasn't able to venture out of the booth much, but hopefully you were able to stop by and say HI!

Independence Day can be a dangerous holiday for our pets. Please do not bring your dog to firework displays, and remember to keep your dogs indoors. Bathroom breaks should be leashed, even when inside of a fenced yard.

Unfortuantely, shelters see a LOT of dogs coming in during the days following Independence Day. Dogs can become fearful over the noises, and may try to escape, or run away. They have been known to jump fences, and break tie out cables, even when this may not be typical behavior. Additionally, if your dog is not sound-sensitive, fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly, and others may not be aware of a curious dog!

Have fun, be safe, and remember to leave Fido at home if you'll be heading out this weekend!

I have been reposting this article every summer because it includes some very important information. If you've already read it, I'll encourage you to read it again. Heat stroke is a real concern, and it is serious!

Hidden Dangers of Summer

". . .the biggest danger to our pets during the summer may be something you can't see, smell, or hear. Heat stroke is a common occurrence in dogs. Most people won't recognize the early warning signs that a dog is suffering from heat exhaustion, which if left untreated, leads to heat stroke and ultimately death.

Please remember some basics first and foremost. If YOU'RE hot, they are even hotter. Providing outdoor dogs with shade and shelter regardless of temperature and fresh cool water is also extremely important in hot, humid weather."
