What's new at Mutt Magic?
Wow, it's HOT out there!! I hope that everybody is staying cool, and finding good indoor activities to keep your dogs stimulated, calm, and entertained. If you need activity ideas, you can revisit our blog post on "target training ," which can be very mentally stimulating.
Keeping the heat in mind, we do have classes starting throughout the summer. You may find indoor and air-conditioned classes at Divine K9, in Forest Hill. The schedule is listed for you, below.
Amber has resumed behavioral consults at the Humane Society of Harford County. The next consult date is August 6, from 11-12:30pm. They are held on the first and third Saturday of each month, and are first come first served. Please contact Amber for hours of availability if you or a friend is in need of help!
I hope to see everybody soon.
Sincerely,
Aja Harris

CompAnimals
I was reading an article while sitting in a waiting room. . .waiting. . .for an appointment! It included information regarding how to keep your senior dog healthy and satisfied in old age. It really hit home for me, since Esco is currently 11 years old. I have "retired" him from doing demos for the company for the most part, mainly because I have noticed him slowing down. This article advised otherwise, however. It said that, basically, "If you don't use it, you loose it." Older dogs need something to do to remain sharp, and, yes, they may even benefit from learning new tricks!
All of that said, I would like to highlight CompAnimals as the local rescue organization for the month. They specialize in finding homes for senior dogs. As most know, dogs can find themselves homeless at any stage in life. Don't overlook a senior dog as an addition to your home; they have several benefits. Senior dogs are mature. . .meaning, "What you see is what you get." While they'll still go through an adustment period when transitioning to a new home, there will be no personality changes experienced, such as when a younger dog matures into its adult personality. Often, senior dogs will come housebroken, and even obedience trained as well. That's not to say you shouldn't enter a class with a senior dog. At Mutt Magic, we work with senior dogs often. You will want to keep them stimulated, and build your bond as a new owner.
If you're considering saving the life of a senior dog, please visit CompAnimals online, here . Remember also, that senior dogs can be highly active and have a lot to offer. Esco entered his last competition and placed 1st at the age of 10 years!
Would you like to have your rescue or other non-profit dog related organization highlighted in our newsletter? At Mutt Magic we support rescue; there are no charges for these ads, and they're guaranteed to reach dog people! Please send us detailed information that you would like to share, and it can be included in an upcoming newsletter.

Henry needs a home!
 |
Henry is a 6-year old, male, collie/hound mix, and as you can see he is a cutie! He loves long walks, chasing squirrels, and above all else affection from people. He makes a great running partner (currently runs 3-4 miles a few times per week).

Henry is neutered and up-to-date on all of his shots. House-trained and knows various commands (sit, down, place, heel, paw, fetch). He is excitable, but well-trained and reliably obedient. Not recommended for a home with children.

If you are interested in adopting Henry, please contact Aja, and she can give you more information on the adoption process. Thank you for reading!
